dvips bounding box

Sorry I'm not responding in-thread, but I just subscribed to the general
tex-live list
and thus I don't have a prior email to respond to.

What is the practical problem that is being addressed by all this
discussion about
the dvips-generated bounding box comment?  What use is this bounding box
comment being put to, and how is that use less than optimal, and what
standard
exists that directs such use?
