Dvips fails in texlive 2022, texlive 2023 and MacTeX

Howdy,

Hmmm... I just compiled a simple file via latex->dvips->ps2pdf with no problems. This is with a fully updated TeX Live 2023 originally installed with the MacTeX installer.
