Hello Everbody,
Those interested in publishing in PNAS by using latex (obviously) will
find this interesting... Here I have copied a useful contribution from
Ricardo Azevedo about the use of pnas.bst with natbib.sty.
Quoting Ricardo Azevedo <rbazev at sbcglobal.net>:

Furthermore I have still some problems when I try to use the command \citet,
which, in numerical citation mode, should produce the authors name's followed
by the reference's number.
My document reads like this (PNAS file)
-----------------------------------------
\usepackage[numbers,sort&compress]{natbib}
\begin{document}
...
Although previous work \citep{Smith01,Wilson02,Sole03} strongly critized these
methods, \citet{Alonso04} discovered a new dance in Paco Pigali boite
(BH, MG, Brazil) that produce an instataneous sense of happiness to those
who dance.
...
\bibliographystyle{pnas}
\bibliography{file.bib}
\end{document}
-----------------------------------------
Where [numbers] is the option for numerical citation mode (otherwise authors
year is by default in natbib.sty) and sort&compress produces (1-5) rather than
(1;2;3;4;5) as required.
When I use the plainnat.bst instaed, my document reads (PLAINNAT file)
-----------------------------------------
\usepackage[numbers,sort&compress]{natbib}
\begin{document}
...
Although previous work \citep{Smith01,Wilson02,Sole02} strongly critized these
methods, \citet{Alonso03} discovered a new dance in Paco Pigalli boite (BH,MG,
Brazil) that produce an instataneous sense of happiness to those who dance.
...
\bibliographystyle{plainnat}
\bibliography{file.bib}
\end{document}
-----------------------------------------
When I am using plainnat, I don't have any problem in obtaining right textual
refereces. I mean that when I compile PLAINAT file, I obtain:
-----------------------------------------
...
Although previous work (2-4) strongly critized these methods, Alonso et al.
(1) discovered a new dance in Paco Pigalli boite (BH,MG,Brazi)
...
References
1. Alonso, D., Maciel F., and Guimeraes, M. 2003. Paco Pigalli super-nova

of Dancing Research. 345, 234-267.
4. Wilson, G.T. 2002. ...
-----------------------------------------
By contrast by using document PNAS file, I obtain first a latex warning:
Package natbib Warning: Author undefined for citation `Alonso03'
(natbib) on page 1 on input line 23.
and then the final document produces a citation as follows:
-----------------------------------------
...
Although previous work (1-3) strongly critized these methods, (author?)
(4) discovered a new dance in Paco Pigalli boite (BH,MG,Brazi)
...

Do you have any idea related to the origins to this problem that can help
to solve it? Do you think there is a bug in pnas.bst.?
Thank you for you attention!
David.
