Hintview conundrum

Hello list,

The following rant is FYI only.

I am using TeX Live 2023 on Kubuntu Linux 22.04.2 LTS and am
experiencing problems with HiTeX and Hintview. (In preparation of a new
'knuth-hint' package.)

It appears that TeX Live 2023 ships the 'hitex' executable with this
signature:

This is HiTeX, Version 3.141592653-2.6-2.0 (TeX Live 2023)

(Compiling TL produces an almost identical version signature, except for
'2024' at the end.)

TL'23 also ships a 'hintview' executable. However, this viewer aborts on
any *.hnt file created with 'hitex' with the error message

Wrong HINT version: got 2, expected 1

On the HINT homepage (https://hint.userweb.mwn.de/hint/hintview.html), I
find an updated 'hintview' for Linux that groks the *.hnt files.

Kubuntu 22.04.2 LTS ships the 'libGLEW.so' library in version 2.2.
'hintview-1' seems to expect version 2.1, and 'hintview-2' requests
version 1.13 (sic!) of this shared object. Adding suitable softlinks in
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ both variants of 'hintview' seem to work.
Quite a mess, IMHO.

Stay safe!
Andreas
