afaik fabrice still maintains his sources if only because he needs them for
xemtex; so i wonder what 'starting point' means here since they are still ok;
the only thing fabrice dropped doing for tex live was the installer

texlive is both
- the reference texmf tree
- a reference binary distribution
i can imagine multiple binary variants to operate on the same tree (currently
miktex ships his own); i'm also curious what will happen with the miktex-unix
variant if that one surfaces; in that case we have multiple binary variants for
most platforms (all capable of operating with the reference tree)
