[tex-k] xdvi starts up without showing option menu in right side of window

Hi,

I had not used xdvi for some time.

xdvi test.dvi &

opens up a Window without visible menus in right side

but I accidentally discovered that hitting the x key makes them visible

(as well as the scrollbars)

I removed my .xdvirc for testing

$ which -a xdvi
/Library/TeX/texbin/xdvi

$ xdvi --version
xdvik version 22.87.03 (Xaw toolkit)
Libraries: kpathsea version 6.3.1, freetype version 2.9.1

I am using TeXLive darwing-legacy on mac osx 10.9.5

any info I can provide?
