The same should work again! Two possible ways:
pwd | sed -e 's/&/\\&/g' -e 's/\$/\\$/g' | ...
or
pwd | sed -e 's/\([$&]\)/\\\1/g' | ...
sed substitutes each member of the set [$&] with \ (escaped with
another \) and itself (\1).
