Your minimal example did not include pdfsync.sty, that's why I  
thought that you did not use it.

When I tried your minial example, I must have been using a home  
patched version of pdfsync.sty. could you try the following: right  
after the \begin{document} type the following line

\makeatletter\@par\makeatother

typeset and see if synchronization works.
