Howdy,

1)But how should TeXShop ``know'' to search forward (i.e., it's the  
start of an equation) or backward (i.e., it is the end of the in-line  
equation)?

2)You also have to worry about literal $'s, \$.

PS: literal \} or \{ aren't dealt with correctly now! It's a  
difficult problem since they don't have to match but it would be nice  
if you could check \left\{ and \right\}.
